The Best Passes

Steep climbs and descents, bends at an altitude between 1200 and 2700 meters are pure tests for those who wants to dare. Here a list of some of the most beautiful climbs that can found around Bormio:

  • Stelvio pass: it’s the most popular and exciting climb. 21 km from Bormio to Stelvio pass, with more than 1,500 m drop and a maximum gradient of 14%.
  • Gavia pass: an often crucial climb during the Giro d’Italia with its 25 km and more than 1,400 m drop separating Bormio from Gavia pass. This is a climb full of tension, with an endless series of sprints and challenging slopes.
  • Mortirolo pass: they say it is the most difficult climb in Europe, 12 km from Mazzo in Valtellina to Passo della Foppa, more than 1,300 m drop and a maximum gradient of 18%.
  • Bernina Pass: a long climb from Tirano to Bernina Pass, after 33 km and an almost 2,000 m drop.
  • Foscagno Pass: a climb on the road from Bormio to Livigno; 24 km and an almost 1,400 m drop.
  • Cancano: this is a climb from Premadio – just a couple of km from Bormio – to the Fraele towers (at the entrance of Valle di Cancano) along a series of hairpin turns; about 9 km and a 750 m drop.
  • Bormio 2000: a climb to the Bormio 2000 ski area; 10 km and a 700 m drop.
